Through a series of strategic military campaigns, Edward succeeded in extending his influence over neighboring regions, including Mercia and East Anglia. His relationship with the Mercian kingdom, in particular, was complex. Although Mercia had traditionally been a rival kingdom, Edward’s sister, Ælfwynn, was married to a Mercian nobleman, and through this marital alliance, Edward's influence grew in the region.
Edward’s strategic alliance with Mercia eventually led to the incorporation of Mercian territories into his kingdom. By the time of his death in 924, Edward had made significant strides toward unifying England, which would be fully realized under his son, Athelstan, who succeeded him.
Domestic and Religious Policies
Internally, Edward sought to strengthen his rule by fostering a strong relationship with the church. Alfred the Great had laid the foundation for a strong Christian presence in Wessex, and Edward continued these religious reforms. Edward supported the establishment of monasteries and the rebuilding of churches, promoting Christianization as a way to stabilize his kingdom.
His reign also saw the continuation of the legal reforms initiated by his father. These reforms were designed to enhance the administration of justice and establish a more cohesive legal system throughout his kingdom.
